Everything he did was a trigger for a belly laugh.

Expect a tv tribute by weeks end.

Bert Newton, Don Lane, Noelene Browne, etc.

Expect a DVD, or set of them, by end of June

Not hard to guess.

I can imagine Gra-Gra saying "You mean I had to die in order to take
Kylie off the front pages?"

Anyone could have said that. They just thought they wouldn't coz everybody
would & then they'd get mocked for being way too obvious and a bit lame. But
it only takes one, right? You just thought "nah, stuff it, I'm gonna just
say it." Well, good on YOU. Congratulations, you are the winner.

I'd hope not, Martin was very public in his condemnation of Graham's
performance and demeanour in that interview where GK tore him apart.
In fact I seem to remember Ray on Neil Mitchells radio show here in
Melbourne calling him a complete asshole.
At least with Chisolm back at Nine there's some genuine respect for
Kennedy and what he did for the network. When he fell on hardtimes Paker
basically said "fuck him" but Chisolm paid out of his own pockets to
help out in appreaciation of what he had done for the network and the
industry.
I'm damn sure that both GK and Bert as well as Don Lane get nothing out
of those DVDs. It all goes to Kerry.

Uh... and so there should be. I admit that the media goes over the top,
noticeably overdoing the whole Kylie thing of late but if there is a time to
have Graham Kennedy tributes, then the time is now obviously. Doing them
next year will seem a bit dumb, dontcha think?

GK deserves all of the tributes that are bound to come. Again, I admit, it
will be overdone to buggery but he deserves tributes for his contributions
to tv and radio.

I grew up in Tasmania in the late 60's and 70's, and we never got any
Graham Kennedy. I used to wonder what he was like when he used to win
Logies. So to me this is sort of like hearing that some TV personality in
the US died. No offence meant. We still miss out on a lot of mainland
cultural references. Sometimes I think we're half Australian and half New
Zealand.

(we had two TV channels. ABC and TVT6 Hobart. There's only so much you can
fit on. And I remember Aunty Jack, and even Bob Dyer, so it's not like I'm
too young)

I inferred the crow incident from a lyric by the band 'Cardinal'

"G. Kennedy got kicked in the arse a couple of times
For his impersonation of a crow"

Ironically they were based in the USA. Shows how times change.

Yep. I was enjoying the snippets they played on the late news, too, of his
various shows. I first really began watching him when Aggregation came and
Canberra got nine (win) and we got Coast to Coast (when John Mangos had
joined the show). Some nights it plodded, but others it was a scream.

** On IMT, broadcast live in Melbourne in the late 60s, there was a segment
once where a young woman from the audience volunteered to a wash GKs hair
with some new brand of shampoo that was being advertised on the show.

When she was fingering GKs hair with the shampoo she casually remarked - " I
didn't know you had so little ".

This got a big laugh from the audience.

GK, not to be outdone, got up from his desk and gave the woman a big
cuddle, sat down again and made the exact same remark !

That got an even bigger laugh !!!!!!

The "late item" was there from show 1 and had nothing to do with a VHS tape.

As Kennedy was signing off from "GK News Show"/"Coast To Coast" he would
say, "It's time for us to P.O.Q.". (Eric Pearce considered this coarse in
the extreme and, on his suggestion to Kennedy, the P.O.Q. was later replaced
by a phrase with the initials P.O.Q., such as "pluck our quokkas".)

And each night, Tony Connolly's ("Tony the Moustache Twirler" from "Blankety
Blanks") fist containing a rolled up piece of script would slam down on the
desk and interrupt him. Kennedy would say, "What's this"? Tony would reply
(off mic), "It's a late item". Kennedy would then ask, "Has it been
checked"? Tony would say "Yes". "How many sources"? "Two." "Name them!"
Tony would answer: "Tomato and chocolate" (or something else equally silly
and saucelike). Kennedy would then snatch the item (a joke news item) out
of his hand and read it. "Good night!" Roll credits.

After they began doing the show with an audience, the last few seconds of
the credits would be met with a huge laugh from the audience. We never saw
why, but it was undoubtedly triggered by Kennedy doing something disgusting,
such as standing up and revealing that he was wearing only y-fronts under
the desk.

Rather like a real-life occurrence related to me by the late, great Neva
Carr-Glynn (AKA Ness Tate), the radio and film actress. She had some dog
food cooking on the stove when Rod Taylor showed up. Ness wasn't around
and Rod was hungry. Hilarity ensued.

Ness claimed Taylor threw up when he was told the awful truth, but he
needn't have bothered, because Ness fed her dog(s) better than she ate
herself [1]. <g>

Come to that, this was done in Will and Grace as well.

[1] Not that she actually owned a dog when I knew her, but she had a
habit of adopting neighbour's wandering pets and giving them new names.
Truly a grand old drunken eccentric of the old school.

Yes, possum, I was a meerkat pup still in primary school, but Graham
was a god in our household.
I recall another time when Bert was plugging fly or hair spray and
Graham just quietly snuck up close to him and just stared at Bert
really really intently. That's all he did and the audience was roaring
with laughter and we were too.

Let me start by saying that Graham Kennedy was an idol of mine from when
I was living in Melbourne from 1973 to 1977.From seeing a little bit of
"The Graham Kennedy show" to "Coast To Coast",anytime that Graham was
on TV,I always did what I could to tune in.For some reason, his sense of
humour seemed to strike a chord with me.It usually takes a lot to make
me laugh out loud, but Graham always made me laugh.
My favourite Graham Kennedy moment however occurred on December 8,last
year, when I had a delivery to do to Kennilworth Nursing Home in
Bowral. The delivery required about four trolley loads of boxes to be
wheeled into the reception area and into a storeroom. On the first
load,I was aware of a couple of residents watching what I was doing, but
on the second load,I nearly fell over when I saw that Graham was
sitting close by.When I finished the delivery,I asked the Sister if I
could say hello to Graham. She went over and spoke to him.He looked at
me said something and nodded. When I went to him I felt nervous.I said
hello and shook his hand.I told him that I was an admirer of his work
to which he said thank you.He asked about my work and how often I came
to Bowral. He said he felt well, but on reflection I did'nt think he
looked well.I thanked him for his time and he thanked me for my kind
words. We shook hands again and said our goodbyes.
The Sister told me that I was incredibly lucky as Graham was a very
private person and she did'nt think he would agree to talk to me.I felt
like I was walking on air.
Australia has lost its King of Entertainment.
He was not just a funny actor/entertainer.
He was a gentleman.
I was honoured to meet him.
R.I.P Graham Kennedy.Australia will never forget you.

Very nice story. I guess I must have run into about 80% of those he worked
closely with at some time or another but never Graham, private as he was.
Would loved to have met him though. I'm glad you got a chance to speak to
him and I know you fully appreciate what an honour it was for you. Thanks
for relating your encounter with The King.

He will be forever remembered as the best by so many people.
