Yet only a few weeks later, SBS "deferred" an episode that made fun of
Catholics in case it offended people.

Because it is not really a religion. That bit was only made up by Hubbard to
give it favored tax status. OTOH, you can find Bloody Mary everywhere on
Channel BT. Yes, it was offensive. Christianity mocks itself though with all
that bullshit about "transubststantiation". It is screaming out for parody.

That was the episode. It was just held off a few years in the US. By the
time they got up to here it had already been aired over there anyway.

When will fuckwits like Tom Cruise learn that the less they protest the
better for them? Without his ranting and Isaac Hayes leaving the show I
would possibly *never* have viewed South Park Series 9 episode 12, and I'm
sure the same would go for a lot of people. As it is I'm screening it for
people who missed it.

Go South Park. A pity the Simpsons beat 'em to the Freemasons....

The real reason Isaac Hayes left South Park is not
because of the COS (they're more of a cult than a
church, though), but rather because he suffered
a stroke on Jan 17th.

But his church felt they could gain some PR out of it. Really, really bad
move on their part :)

More likely he's too sick to say anything much, and the COS decided to speak
on his behalf.

I agree it's a cult, not a church.

The plot thickens ...

from imdb.com:

TV columnists were speculating today (Wednesday) about how South Park
creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone would handle tonight's scheduled
episode, titled "The Return of Chef." A publicity notice released by the
network said that although the South Park characters are happy "to have
their old friend back, they notice that something about Chef seems
different. When Chef's strange behavior starts getting him in trouble, the
boys pull out all the stops to save him." In the past, Chef has been voiced
by Isaac Hayes. In a statement last week, Hayes indicated that he had pulled
out of the show because of an episode that lampooned Scientology. But rumor
has spread that Hayes may have been forced to release the statement,
possibly, in part, because of health reasons. The New York Daily News
speculated today that the producers may have used existing dialogue from
Hayes that aired in previous episodes to create tonight's episode. And the
Seattle Times suggested that Parker and Stone plan to use it as another
salvo against Scientology.

Cults have elements in common with churches and vice versa, but they're not
the same. I'll let you go and look it up for yourself.

a little easy now... I'd say they have more than a little in common, churches or mosks
Islam/Christianity are defacto cults of death, the main difference compared to other
cults like scientology is size... and experience of millenia in how to play people's fears

well lets be fair religion is for morons, as is south park.... so the gay reference to TC
is cheap.. only some assraped christan/muslim boys could have com up with that, I would
say scientology is a parody to the sillyness of religions.. and the south park guys are...well
braindead or clueless or they would go up against the real madness (islam/chritianity) and
see scientology fot what it is, a rather harmless parody to its peers.. .not halve as mad as
the other religions..

The episode has not been banned anywhere.
The production company wouldn't show it in UK for fear of being sued by
Tom Cruise. Britain's defamation laws are much broader than here or in
the US and Cruise has sued several British tabloids. Hence the irony of
the line "I'll sue you! I'll sue you in England!"

The laws in the US are very liberal, but our laws are based on the English
laws. They certainly belong in the same corner as those of the UK, not the
US.
