Forget all that Melbournecentric rubbish above - the early TV world
didn't revolve around the Mexicans,as much as they'd like to think so.

The show your thinking of is Captain Fortune - the "Uncle Reg" was
comedian Reg Quartley, who wore a cap with straight short, straggly,
wirey hair hanging down from underneath.

It also included that now-turned-religious TV personality Clifford
Warne, as a magician and ventriloquist, with his puppet Gus.

Renown TV actor the late Les Foxcroft also made appearances as a
clown.

Can remember it vividly!!!

(It always fascinates me about 50s/60s kids show on TV - Sydney and
Melbourne - that the central characters were always older men??
Probably something that wouldn't be tolerated in today's politically
correct atmosphere ....)

early tv "revolved around the mexicans

I'm always amazed when it takes someone 40 years to come forward. I'll still
bet there were a lot more dodgy priests at the time than TV hosts though.

The show was called 'Funfair' with Reg Quartley - pork pie hat, orange straw like hair & chequed coat with Chris Beard? not sure, in tux, slick hair, spiv moustache & a ventriloquist doll (forget name) made at Epping ATN 7 studios (Aunty a cleaner there) on I think 10am Saturdays (circa 1964-67?). Segments included singers, games, quizzes & guests. One sponser was 'Downyflake Doughnuts'. Brother & I got on once in 1966 I was 10yrs (thanks to Aunty) Guest that day was first Aboriginal to achieved University Degree Charles Perkins. Brother & I won prizes, mine was a 'Tumblebug' a steel slinky. It was eye opener to see a studio TV show being done.

A very detailed and interesting answer.

I wonder, though, whether Jason is still interested, given he apparently asked

This program ran ,I think for 11/2 hrs every Sat afternoon during
the
mid
'60s. It had a central character called "uncle Reg" or similar and had
various segments including one by the Police re road safety etc. It
was
ch 7
or 9
Anyone remember it?
thanx,.. Jason.
Jason
The show was called 'Funfair' with Reg Quartley - pork pie hat, orange
straw like hair & chequed coat with Chris Beard? not sure, in tux, slick
hair, spiv moustache & a ventriloquist doll (forget name) made at Epping
ATN 7 studios (Aunty a cleaner there) on I think 10am Saturdays (circa
1964-67?). Segments included singers, games, quizzes & guests. One sponser
was 'Downyflake Doughnuts'. Brother & I got on once in 1966 I was 10yrs
(thanks to Aunty) Guest that day was first Aboriginal to achieved
University Degree Charles Perkins. Brother & I won prizes, mine was a
'Tumblebug' a steel slinky. It was eye opener to see a studio TV show
being done.
A very detailed and interesting answer.
I wonder, though, whether Jason is still interested, given he
apparently
asked
the question in August 2009.
poor bastards been logging in 6 times a day for nearly 6 years to get this
answer
Now that he finally got the answer, what will he do with the rest of
his life?
Post another question?
Yes, it's important to have a goal in life.
It's all very 'Deep Thought" in my opinion. Will he pass his new question
onto his heirs?

Hi
Just saw your blog after a few years.

I've been driven mad trying to find anything on Reg and that Saturday show. This is what I remember.
1. Saturday's for sure though I thought it was AM and definitely channel 7.
2. Uncle Reg (Quartley) and Uncle Max were co hosts. Max had a pencil thin mustache, wore a suit and was the straight man to Reg.
3. The theme song was "happy days are here again" sung along to by the studio audience kids.
4. Clifford ( a ventriloquist) and Gus the puppet were regulars. He was a Christian type with a moral to each skit.
5. Cartoons included "Colonel Bleep" and an Aussie effort called " The Flying Dogtor". It was not animated but the camera scrolled along across a picture book type landscape with voice overs for the action and dialogue. The song was " calling flying dogtor woof woof, calling flying dogtor woof woof, through the air, without a care, the flying dogtor!" Or similar.
I loved it. The web suggests the show was Captain Fortune but that doesn't sit right with me.

Any info or light on the subject would be awesome.

I'm almost sure I saw Reg live once at the Cabramatta Civic Hall but might have been dreaming.

There was a Saturday afternoon show after Captain Fortune with an Uncle (was it Uncle Norman ?) & he was always giving out prizes. If you won he gave you "an Oris watch", & if you lost he gave you "an Oris watch". It got to a point where he's said it so many times he'd he's exaggerate the word "an", sort of like "a-a-a-n....Oris watch. From that point on I thought these watches were poor quality, however in actual fact they weren't. And yes the rather camp image of Reggie Quartley is still etched into my memory banks. Odd there is not a single image of him on the net, that I could find. Oh, and the man with the puppet, that never seemed to age in three decades, Clifford Warne. There are articles and images of him.
On another subject of The Cabbage Quiz with Desmond Tester. I believe he referred to all the kids off air as "the Stinkies". I guess I may have been one of them as I was on the show about the age of 6. Being too young to be questioned, I had to stand down the back, however became quite irate when Desmond threw a perfectly good flower pot on the ground smashing it in to many pieces. Well, I caught Desmond's attention, and he said "whats wrong ?" Anyway I responded about the flower pot, and he said, "You cheaky......(something or other), however I don't think this ever went to air. On the way home, I distinctly remember walking past the news studio with Chuck Faulkner sitting at his on air desk.

I sure hope Jason James has been watching this thread carefully for over
seven years. Otherwise it would be a complete waste to respond to such
an old thread.
